Does A Heated Towel Rail Need A Thermostatic Valve?

Thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) are a great way to manage your central heating system. They also ensure that radiators turn on when they need to. As a way of reducing heating costs, TRVs are often recommended.

But can they be mounted on heated towel rails instead? We'll show you why this might not be the best choice.

The purpose and function of TRVs

To give you more control over your heating system, thermostatic radiator valves are available.

Most TRVs will have a dial that corresponds to temperature ranges. 1 is lower, and 5 is higher.

These numbers are not for the radiator's temperature but the temperature inside the room. This is a standard error that many people make.

The valve will open the radiator if a room gets cold. The valve will close automatically when the desired temperature is reached, and no more hot water can be pumped into the radiator. The valve will open once the temperature drops to maintain a constant temperature in the room.

The room temperature when the valve closes will be set to 1. The valve will not close if the temperature is set to 5 The dial should be set to 2 or 3.

The constant opening and closing the valve ensures that hot water doesn't get pumped continuously into radiators. This helps to maintain a consistent temperature, and reduces energy wastage.

Why TRVs should not be used on towel rails

It is theoretically possible to mount a thermostatic radiator valve onto a heated towel rail. The process would be the same as the one described above.

It is recommended that at least one radiator be installed in your home. This radiator should have manual valves and not a TRV. This radiator (or towel rail) should be located in the bathroom.

One radiator in your home must be TRV-free. This is to ensure safety. The radiator would still be capable of pumping water through it, even if the other TRVs fail to open or the boiler reaches the required temperature without causing any damage to the boiler.

Heating towel rails are bought primarily for their intended use in bathrooms. It makes sense not to install a thermostatic radiator on them.

A thermostatic valve is possible with manual valves if you have an existing rad or rail for your bathroom.
